Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) presents Home 2024, developed with local schools and the Wiradyuri community as part of the program Home: Aboriginal art from New South Wales.
In Bathurst, students from Carenne, Rockley, Sofala, Spring Hill, Trunkey, and Wattle Flat Public Schools studied works by Karla Dickens, Jonathan Jones, Gabi Briggs Widders and Amy Hammond. Students participated in culture, language, and art making workshops with Wiradyuri Elders and community including Wiradyuri Traditional Owners Central West Aboriginal Corporation, Wirribee Aunty Leanna Carr, Dindima Aunty Gloria Rogers, Gulbaanha Uncle Ray Rogers, Yiri Sue Rice, Jonathan Jones, and Jessika Spencer. Over the year long program, students produced a body of work for exhibition at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.
Students also engaged with BRAG and Wiradyuri community during major exhibition Dhuluny: the war that never ended, curated by Wiradyuri/Kamilaroi curator Jonathan Jones with Wirribee Aunty Leanna Carr. The exhibition commemorated the 200-year anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law on 14 August 1824 in the Bathurst Region and offered visitors the opportunity to share and understand the true history of our Country and celebrate the resilience of the Wiradyuri Nation.
The Home Program is a collaboration between the Art Gallery of New South Wales, NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit, Wiradjuri community at Wagga Wagga and Aboriginal communities and regional galleries across NSW. It connects schools to local Aboriginal artists, community, language and culture. In 2024 the program was realised on Wiradjuri country at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Anaiwan country at New England Regional Art Museum, Kamilaroi/Gomeroi country at Tamworth Regional Gallery and Gathang (Worimi and Biripi) country at Manning Regional Art Gallery.
